Transportation Initiatives

Community Parking District Approved — At its meeting on Monday, December 7, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the request of several Franklin Farm neighborhoods to make Old Dairy Road and Tranquility Lane a “Community Parking District” (CPD). This designation prohibits trailers, campers, boats, and many other vehicles from parking on those streets.

Recently, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation installed signs on Old Dairy Road and Tranquility Lane that will let drivers know about the ban. The Fairfax County Police Department will begin issuing warnings and tickets to offending vehicles in the next few days. Owners of vans, trailers, motor homes, campers, etc., must find alternative parking arrangements outside of Franklin Farm.

Traffic-Calming Projects — Residents of the Flintwood neighborhood voted to approve the installation of a single traffic-calming device on Thorngate Drive. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors also approved this plan at its November 16 meeting, and the device will likely be installed in the spring of 2010.

A task force composed of Dower House neighborhood residents is considering the placement of traffic-calming measures on Dower House Drive. A community meeting and vote on this issue should be scheduled in the next few months.

Yield to Pedestrians

“Yield to Pedestrian in Crosswalk/$100-$500 Fine” signs have been installed by VDOT along Franklin Farm Road at Thorngate Drive, Old Dairy Road, Pond Crest Lane, and Tuckaway Drive.

Failure to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks has long been a violation. However, the increased fine of up to $500 per violation was authorized by the Virginia General Assembly for Fairfax County after the county pushed for this as part of its legislative program.

Drivers who see a sign that reminds them about the increased penalty and who are aware of the required court appearance are likely to think twice about speeding through crosswalks, making it safer for pedestrians to cross the street.

We are asking your help in exercising judgment as you drive in Franklin Farm and being aware of pedestrians waiting to cross. Thank you and drive safely!
