The closest location for Franklin Farm residents to safely dispose of household hazardous waste materials is the I-66 Transfer Station located at 4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax. Hours of operation are Thursday from 1-5 p.m., Friday 8-12 p.m. and Saturday 9-4 p.m. For questions, please call the Division of Solid Waste Disposal & Resource Recovery at 703-324-5230.

Accepted materials include: acids, aerosol sprays, auto fluids, coal tar products, creosote products, driveway sealers, floor care products, fungicides, glue (solvent base) herbicides, inks & dyes, insecticides, mercury products, moth balls, paint (oil base), paint thinner, pesticides, poisons, polishes, pool chemicals, rust removers, varnish and stains, weed killers and wood preservatives.

Auto batteries, motor oil and antifreeze accepted separately at the facility. Button, rechargeable (NiCAD), mercury and lithium batteries are the ONLY household batteries accepted. All other batteries may be safely thrown away with your regular waste.

Please transport household hazardous waste to the collection centers in cardboard boxes. Please DO NOT put waste in plastic bags!

Yard Debris Recycling

Yard debris is recycled from April to December.  Please follow these guidelines for preparing yard debris to be ready for pickup. If brush is not properly cut and bundled it may be not be picked up by American Disposal Services. If you have any questions, call American Disposal at 703-368-0500.

-- Brush should be cut in five-foot (5') lengths with less than three inches (3") in diameter limbs.

-- Brush should be tied in bundles no larger then two feet in diameter and placed at the curb.

-- Please remember to place yard debris at curbside the evening before pickup after dusk or before 6 a.m. the morning of pickup.

-- Yard debris is picked up on Wednesdays (the yard debris is separate from the recycling collection).

Recycling Guidelines

Fairfax County changed the county-wide recycling regulations in January 2006 to require all waste collection companies to provide collection of additional recyclables at the curb.

American Disposal, the company that collects the trash and recycling materials in Franklin Farm, offers curbside collection customers the opportunity to set out the following materials at the curb for recycling:

-- Mixed paper, which is all clean paper including newspapers, magazines, catalogs, envelopes, office paper, colored paper, telephone books, junk mail, file folders, sticky notes, cereal and other food boxes (without foil coatings), and shoe boxes (basically any clean paper that tears). They cannot recycle any paper that has food residue on it, like used napkins, paper plates, and pizza boxes.

-- Plastic bottles and jugs of any color. The bottle or jug must have a neck that is smaller than the body of the bottle or jug. Examples of bottles and jugs include, but are not limited to, detergent containers, bleach and other cleaning products, milk jugs, and any plastic drink bottle. They will not recycle any Styrofoam containers, yogurt or margarine tubs, deli containers, or other plastic containers that do not have a neck.

-- Flattened cardboard that is 3 feet by 3 feet or smaller. If the cardboard is not flattened and does not meet this size requirement, it will be collected but disposed of as trash instead of being recycled.

These materials will be collected for recycling in addition to glass food and beverage containers, metal food and beverage containers, newspapers, and yard waste. Please observe the following instructions for placing these materials at the curb for recycling:

-- Place metal, glass, and plastic food, beverage, and household product containers in the recycling bin.

-- All recyclable paper should be bundled and tied, put in a brown paper grocery bag, or placed in a separate recycling bin.

-- Cardboard should be bundled and placed with the paper — or flattened and placed under the recycling bin.

American Disposal thanks all its customers for helping to reduce the amount of waste and for preserving our diminshing resources by recyling these materials. If you have any questions, please call American Disposal at 703-368-0500.
